A Stranger

The bright lights in the hospital room slowly came into focus.

Ethan blinked a few times before opening his eyes.

His head hurt badly.

A doctor noticed he was awake and smiled.

"Good morning, Ethan. Can you hear me?"

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Where am I?"

"You're in the hospital. You were in a car accident."

A few moments later, Ethan's parents rushed into the room.

His mother hugged him tightly.

"Oh, Ethan! Thank God you're awake."

His father smiled with tears in his eyes.

"We were so worried."

Ethan smiled weakly.

"I'm okay."

The doctor asked him a few questions.

"Can you tell me your name?"

"Ethan Carter."

"Do you know who they are?"

"My parents."

"Do you know what year it is?"

Ethan answered every question correctly.

The doctor smiled.

"Very good."

Just then, the door opened.

Lily walked into the room.

She had a bandage on her arm, and there were dark circles under her eyes. She hadn't slept properly since the accident.

When she saw Ethan awake, tears filled her eyes.

"Ethan..."

She rushed toward him.

"I was so scared."

But Ethan looked at her with a confused expression.

"I'm sorry..."

He said politely.

"Do I know you?"

Lily froze.

The room became silent.

She looked at him, hoping he was joking.

"Ethan... it's me."

He frowned.

"I'm sorry... I don't remember you."

Lily's smile slowly disappeared.

She looked at his parents, confused.

His mother lowered her eyes.

The doctor stepped forward.

"Ethan has lost some of his memories because of the head injury."

"He remembers his family, his school, and many parts of his life."

"But he doesn't remember the last two years."

Lily felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.

Two years.

That meant...

He had forgotten everything about them.

Their friendship.

Their first date.

Their first "I love you."

Every memory they had made together...

Was gone.

Lily slowly took a step back.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Ethan looked at her with guilt.

"I'm really sorry."

"I wish I could remember."

Lily forced herself to smile, even though her heart was breaking.

"It's okay."

But it wasn't okay.

Not at all.

As she quietly walked out of the hospital room, she looked down at the silver bracelet Ethan had given her on her birthday.

She touched it gently and whispered,

"I remember enough for both of us."

Outside the room, Lily broke down in tears.

For her, nothing had changed.

She still loved Ethan.

But for Ethan...

She was just a stranger.
