The next morning, Ethan couldn't stop thinking about the diary.
He had read only a few pages, but every word felt real. He still couldn't remember writing them, yet he knew they came from his heart.
Later that day, he called Lily.
"Hi," she answered.
"Are you free this afternoon?" Ethan asked.
"Yes."
"Can we meet?"
"Of course."
They met at the park where they used to spend time together.
Lily saw Ethan sitting on their favorite bench.
"You came early," she said.
Ethan smiled.
"I didn't want to keep you waiting."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Ethan looked at her.
"I read the diary."
Lily nodded.
"What did you think?"
"I still don't remember our past," he said honestly. "But I know one thing."
"What?"
"I must have been very lucky to have someone like you in my life."
Lily smiled, but her eyes filled with tears.
"Thank you."
Ethan looked down.
"I know I'm not the same person you fell in love with."
Lily shook her head.
"You are. You just don't remember it."
Ethan thought for a moment.
"What if... we start over?"
Lily looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"I want to know you again. Not because of the diary or because everyone says we were together."
He smiled.
"I want to become your friend again."
Lily's heart felt lighter.
"I'd like that."
Ethan stood up and held out his hand.
"Hi, I'm Ethan Carter."
Lily laughed and shook his hand.
"Hi, I'm Lily Evans."
"It's nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you too."
They both laughed.
For the first time since the accident, the sadness between them felt a little smaller.
As they walked through the park, Ethan noticed how easy it was to talk to Lily.
She made him laugh.
She listened when he spoke.
She understood him without judging him.
He still couldn't remember the love they had shared.
But deep inside, he could feel something growing again.
Maybe love didn't always begin with memories.
Maybe sometimes...
It began with choosing the same person all over again.
